MIXTAPE REVIEW: KID VISHIS – BAR4BAR

I know there are many hip-hop performers that are not the best lyricists (Gucci, Waka, most of Young Money, etc) now days but with up and coming lyricists like Jay Electronica, J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar and such, lyrics are starting to come back into fashion. Also with the death of auto tune (no pun intended) it seems that there are a lot less radio friendly songs on albums now days and that’s a good thing in my book.

One of the lesser known up and comers that other hip-hop artists need to pay attention to is Kid Vishis, the younger brother of Detroit’s Royce Da 5’9”. This mixtape comes after a long time of waiting for his loyal fans and it doesn’t disappoint. With 21 tracks he gives us plenty of material to enjoy, and he makes it hard to choose your favorite track. With punch line after punch line Kid Vishis goes hard on this mixtape and shows he can contend with other young and upcoming artists.

Hit the jump to see how and why this got a 5 star rating from me.

Kid Vishis starts and ends his tape with the common Intro and Outro method, be he does what only a portion of MCs do on those tracks and that is actually rap. Out of the 21 tracks there are no skits, just funny comments from Vishis followed by crazy punch lines. He shows that he can do more than deliver devastating punch lines in songs like Nightmare which was produced by Sid Roams, where he tells a story along with inputting scary movie punch lines all over.

My favorite songs on the CD would have to be Nightmare, I Got Next which is also produced by Sid Roams and The Story (To be continued) produced and mixed by Royce and Vishis main engineer Asar. There is excellent production on the mixtape in addition to those songs I just mentioned above. Overall I would have to give this a 4.5 star rating, although he does change up his flow on several songs like Chronic Music, 420 Anthem, and I don’t Give a Fuck, plus he goes the Kanye West route and distorts his voice on a few songs.

The only song that does not meet expectations out of the 21 tracks is Sick That N A, besides that I believe you can listen to the mixtape all the way through with different sounding production that is awesome on all levels. On the song Fuck A Hook, which sounds like a track Mr Porter would have produced with Slaughterhouse in mind, he raps like he belongs on the track and shows that he can go up head to head with the rest of the Slaughterhouse besides his brother. Gunz On My Back is also another excellent track in which Vishis sounds right at home on. His line “Ya jeans is skinny, ya balls is missin you lame, killin me, you lil’ B ni***s is gay” has to be one of my favorite lines on the album as he calls out skinny jean wearers which he and Royce hate and we are all aware of.

The track I am going to preview for you is Then You Hot produced by Sid Roams. The hook is something that I believe in and so do a lot of up and coming rappers, “If you want that spot, gotta rap like a retard then u hot. Used to be about them bars now it’s not, gotta rap like a retard, then you hot”. Keep it coming Vishis, and if my guess is correct we can expect to see another mixtape by the end of the year. This dude WILL be signed to a major deal in the next year.
