Rarely is rap music ever called beautiful, and once a emcee discovers their niche, they are often limited
in creativity due to record label pressuring or lack of drive to push the limit. Enter Pilot Talk 2, Curren$y's
latest album. Limited in features, basking in excellent production and doused in recondite lyrics, Pilot Talk 2
is a definite must purchase for any rap head. It will even serve as a nice intro to individuals who are new to
'The Jets'.
The Hot Spitta has 6 songs featuring other artist, including his Jets representatives Young Roddy and Trademark Da Skydiver (formally known as just Trademark) who appear on the jazzy 'Flight Briefing' (a sort of 'welcome
track') and the smooth and sultry 'Hold On' (which has excellent drums and kick drums combined with immaculate beat drops). Dom Kennedy makes a appearance on the album with the same superb flow that gathered
him his recent fame combined with excellent production creates a top notch track.
'Silence' featuring Mckenzie Eddy isva drastic change changed compared to the rest of the album. With MissEddy on the vocals, it creates an eerie compounded sound of harmony and eloquence.
On the original Pilot Talk, Spitta effortlessly displayed his ability to create a powerful album and remove himself from the standard mixtape niche he became known for after an eight month period of releasing mixtapes every month. This trend of Curren$y removing himself from that look continues on Pilot Talk 2, although it's at a much slower pace compared to it's senior. For a vast period of time, Curren$y hasn't altered his subject matter (pretty girls, cool clothes, weed and "I rap better than you"). What's unique is how he constantly reinvents his stand on the aforementioned subjects while using complex syntax, metaphors and similes. He remains entertaining while challenging the listener to keep up.
Keeping up with the pacing of Pilot Talk 2 will be much easier, from it's opener 'Airborne Aquarium'
to the closing 'Micheal Knight' remix featuring an extremely haphazard appearance by Raekwon (who adds an
excellent addition to the songs over all feel). Unlike the first Pilot Talk album with the majority being produced by Ski Beatz and feeling more like a 90's album, this album has a much jazzier alternate rock feel. Almost like
a mid 60's rap album.
Pilot Talk 2 is a not a step up from the original Pilot Talk, but it surely isn't a step down. There isn't a bad
song on there but it seemed to need a little juice to have improved from the first Pilot Talk.
Jet's fool.
